Originating in North India, Vaisakhi marks the harvest season along with religious significance for Sikhs worldwide as it commemorates the establishment of the Khalsa order by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.

Every year, during Vaisakhi, the streets of Toronto come alive with vibrant colours, sounds, and aromas featuring a mix of religious rituals, cultural performances, lively music, and delectable Punjabi cuisine.

One of the most iconic aspects of Vaisakhi celebrations in Toronto is the Nagar Kirtan- a vibrant procession that winds its way through the streets. Led by the Sikh community, the Nagar Kirtan is a joyous display of faith and unity, with participants singing hymns, chanting prayers, and showcasing traditional martial arts known as Gatka. Regardless of their background or religion, all spectators are welcome to join in the festivities, reinforcing the message of inclusivity and community cohesion.

2024 Khalsa Day Nagar Kirtan

This year’s Nagar Kirtan will be held on Sunday, April 28th. The procession kicks off at 1 pm from the Canadian National Exhibition grounds, travelling east to Toronto City Hall before concluding at 3:30 pm. Dignitaries will then address the participants until 5:00 pm.
